I find that when my primary language is French, I am significantly happier. I don’t stress much, I laugh about bad things that happen to me, I’m patient, and I’m not really anxious at all.
I think that (most) people are a bit different in each language that they speak, except perhaps those who learned both languages mostly equally from birth (bilingual first language acquisition).
If you only speak two languages, your capacity for each comes from different parts of your brain. Your native language comes from the logical part of your brain (the left side) and your second language comes from the creative and unpredictable side of your brain (the right side). That’s why translation is a difficult task for many, because you have to think with both sides of your brain at the same time.
My theory is that I stress with the left (logical) side of my brain and not with the right (creative) side of my brain and that’s why I stress so much easier in English than in French. That theory contradicts my ability to work as a software developer in Franglais.
What do you think? Do you find some things easier to do in your second language than in your native language?
