Actually, we do use “courriel” in France. It’s the official word and used mainly for official things, like administration.
In the conversational world, which tends to be very different as time goes by, we use “mail”, “email” or mél” (if you speak a very bad English !).

Some people say “mél” but I don”t believe it’s only because of the fear of English. It’s mostly because most people have not learned English, no wish to do so and tend to pronounce it the way it’s easy for them. Also there is no phonetic rules in English, if you do not know how to pronounce a word, it’s impossible to learn it by yourself without the word phonetic (on the contrary with language like German, as you read, you know how to say it). And I must say that in France you never – or rarely – learn phonetics at school… so it does not ease people in learning other language.

Also – make sure that you have scans of your passport AND birth certificate that can easily be retrieved in case of loss of your passport. I will add a post on how to replace your Canadian passport while traveling soon.
